The iPhone 15 Pro Max has a 5x optical zoom lens that lets you zoom in 25 times with the digital zoom

The iPhone 15 Pro Max boasts a novel Telephoto lens incorporating a tetraprism configuration, facilitating an impressive 5x optical zoom capability. This marks a significant enhancement compared to the 3x zoom present in both the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ and the preceding-generation iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max iterations.

While the 5x optical zoom extends the potential to achieve a 25x digital zoom, it's noteworthy that Apple's offering in this regard still lags behind its rivals. For instance, Samsung's latest Galaxy S23 Ultra smartphone flaunts a staggering 100x Space Zoom, capable of capturing imagery from distances of up to 330 feet.

In contrast, the Pixel 7 Pro touts a 30x digital "Super Res Zoom" feature in conjunction with its 5x optical zoom lens. Apple, however, has refrained from heavily emphasizing digital zoom due to its well-documented compromises in image quality. Optical zoom delivers a sharp image through camera hardware, while digital zoom uses software to zoom in.

It's crucial to note that the 5x optical zoom represents a distinct and exclusive attribute of the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ Max, conspicuously absent from its counterpart, the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌. However, both of these devices have several camera upgrades in common. The 48-megapixel primary camera is endowed with an enlarged sensor, enabling the admission of more ambient light. This camera is super awesome and it can be configured to operate at 24mm, 28mm, and 35mm focal & lengths, offering more creative options.

The device now features a 13mm Ultra Wide camera with second-generation sensor-shift optical image stabilization, improving the overall imaging experience.
